I am a fickle, fickle person when it comes to music. I consider OLIVIA (Lufkin) to be my favorite artist because I keep coming back to her even though I go through bands and favorite songs like I go through TV shows. (Which is to say, a lot.) OLIVIA has managed to hold my attention with her music because it runs gamut across a half dozen different genres.
But anyway, despite being fickle, I keep coming back to this song silly song that I got off the She's the Man soundtrack (don't judge, it's a great comfort movie). It should be some random generic alternative rock song but I keep listening to the chorus:
Love me faster than the devil
Run me straight into the ground
Drowning deep inside your water
Drowning deep inside your sound
Love me faster than the devil
Run me straight into the ground
Drowning deep inside your water
Drown in love and memories
I just love the lines 'drowning deep inside your water/drowning deep inside your sound'. I'm pretty apathetic toward O.A.R.'s other music (tried listening to them, not my cup of tea) and I'm pretty sure if I hadn't looked up the lyrics, I wouldn't have liked it nearly as much as I do.
And now for a complete 180.
Vienna Teng's "Recessional" is also one of my favorites. The song is a love story told in reverse and is absolutely haunting; the lyrics are beautiful in that every word is perfectly placed ('And she dreams through the noise, her weight against me, face pressed into the corduroy grooves' and 'I want to search for her in the offhand remarks').
My favorite line is 'and the words, they're everything and nothing'. There's something so heartbreaking and desperate about the simple, almost bare-bones piano accompaniment (the horns come in briefly in the middle).
I love how at 3:07 the crescendo builds with Vienna's humming and then it abruptly decrescendos and fades into nothing.
These two songs couldn't be any less alike in terms of sound, yet they're both unrequited love songs inspired by Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and now I'm really tempted to rewatch the movie.
